Born to India theatre
stalwarts Habib and Moneeka tanvir, Nageen Tanvir has trained
extensively in Hindustani classical vocal music under various well
known Gurus including Smt. Sharbori Mukherjee, Smt. Dipali Nag, smt.
Sulochana Brahaspati and gundecha bandhu. Her music experience also
spans a practical knowledge of the folk and tribal traditions of
north and central India, specifically the musically rich region of
chattisgarh. As a member of the famed naya theatre she has been
involved in creating music for mony of their internationally known
production. Since 2001, she has been the mainstay for music in naya
theatre.

Awards :
2005 Best Innovative Sound Design for her music in crossing, a dance
theatre piece produced by ranan/ at the first national level
Mahindra Excellence in theatre Awards, Delhi.
2005-2007 National Junior Fellowship in the Performing Arts (folk
Music) Ministry of HRD, Government of India, to research and
document the present situation of chhattisgarhi folk music and
develop ways and means to preserve and propagate it.
1990-1996 National scholarship to young workers in cultural fields (
Vocal Music), Ministry of HRD Government of India, to train under
smt. Sulochana Brahaspati in her Guru Shishya Parampara.
Training :
1972-1975 With Smt. Sharbori Mukherjee of the Music Department at
sangeet Natak Akademi. New Delhi.
1977-1983 With Smt. Dipali Nag, Eminent singer and founder of
saptasur choices in Delhi and Kolkata, chairperson of sangeet
Research Academy, Kolkata.
1988-1996 Under Smt. Sulochana Brahaspati. This Training continued
as part of her National scholarship from the government of India.
2000-2006 Special voice training from dhrupad exponents, Gundecha
bandhu, Bhopla
Performance and Demonstration :
Solo Concerts: Since her first solo recital at the residence of the
fundecha brothers in Bhopal (1998),Nageen has presented concerts of
classical, folk and tribal/ at various venues in India (Calcutta,
New Delhi, Balasore,Patna…) and abroad (Lahore and for centre for
performance Research, Aberistwyth-walaes, Uk).
With Smt. Suluchana Brohaspati: During her National
Scholarship study, Nageen accompanied her Guru at performance all
over Delhi performing at instituting such as the India International
centre the French Embassy, the prabhat Utsav and SPIC MACAY.
Seminars and demonstrations: Drawing from her exhaustive
resources of folk, tribal and light classical music along with her
experience in making for the theatre, Nageen has presented lecture
demonstration for the Prithvi Theatre Festival, Mumbai; Bharat
Bhavan; Natya Institute, Bangalote; the Shakespeare Seminar,
Salzburg (Austria) and warious centres in London.
Music Composition:
For Naya Theatre, Bhopal: Nageen became involved in music
composition for Naya Theatre production as early as 1985 with Hirma
ki Amar Kahani. This was followed by dekh rahey Hain Nain (1992),
Mudrarakshas (1996) Sunbeehri and Kamdeo Jka Apna Basant Ritu Ka
Sapna (2001) and Zehreeli Hawa (2002). She has also composed music
for A Broken, a Chicago Actors’ Ensemble Production written and
directed by Habib Tanvir.
For Ranan, Kalkata: Nageen’s first independent music composition
outside of naya Theatre was for Ranan’s crossings (2004), a dance
theatre piece. Nageen has toured to various places in India with
this production as well as to the UK in 2005. Her music won the top
award at first Mahindra Excellence in Theatre in theatre Award in
2005.
For alliance francaise, Bhopal: Nageen Composed music in the
Hindustani Style for tribal children from Uttar Pradesh at the All
India Tribal children’s Workshop held at Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal in
2002.
Acting Experience with Naya Theatre – Highlights
Nageen was literally born into the Naya Theatre and made her stage
debut early on. Since then she has been part of all Naya Theatre
productions as a singer, music composed and actress Some Highights:
Agra Bazaar: Nageen first appeared on stage playing a monkey at the
age of sinc in the 1970 revival of Naya theatre’s acclaimed Agra
Bazaar (1970). She went on to play a child role in the 1976 revival
and the songstress in the 1989 and 2004 – 2006 revivals of the play,
singing lyrics of the famous Urdu poet, Nazir Akbarabadi.
Jis Lahore NAI Dekhya Woh janmiai nai: Nageen sang poems of well
known contemporary poets of India and Pakistan in chorus and a solo
modern heer of the Eminent Punjabi poetess, Amrita Preetam.
Raj-Rakt: Nageen plays the pivotal role of Aparna in this adaptation
from tagore’s play Bisarjan and his novel Rajorshee. Apart from
leading the chorus, she sings several solo pieces. First produced in
2006, this play continues to tour in India and abroad.
Charandas Chor: Nageen has played the role of the Queen in this Naya
Theatre classic of 1975 several times since 2005 |
